Natural Foods Always Are Best – Part 1

Health is a topic of huge complexity, we are bombarded daily with information about what is good for our health and what is not. I am often asked about by clients, "Should I eat a certain food, take a certain supplement or be on a certain diet?" and so on.


There is a fairly simple answer that will apply to at least 95% of these questions. Basically, we need to go back to nature. Our bodies are very complex organisms which we are still trying to understand. The food we eat is also very complex, and again, we still do not totally understand all the ways it impacts our bodies. I will try to keep this as simple as possible. We now know that within our natural foods (totally unprocessed fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, grains, meats and so on) there are literally thousands of nutrients, phytonutrients, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, amino acids and so on. We also know that for any one nutrient to have a certain effect on the body, many more nutrients are required to complete the task. In fact, we have now catalogued around 100,000 unique phytonutrients in our foods! It is a concerted effort requiring a team effort of many nutrients! How bold are we to believe that we can manipulate and isolate nutrients and improve on nature.


For example, science has made a connection between people that eat large quantities of tomatoes and reduced heart disease. It seems that a specific nutrient contained in tomatoes called lycopene has been thought to be responsible for this reduction in heart disease among tomato eaters. The supplement companies were all over this one; they felt that if they could isolate the lycopene and sell it as a supplement it would be like winning the lottery! With heart disease being one of the two largest killers in North America, how could they lose? In the meantime, a large study was done, one group eating real tomatoes, the other taking the supplement of lycopene. To make a long story short, the study showed the tomatoes having a positive effect on heart disease and the supplement having no effect at whatsoever. It seems that there are other nutrients in tomatoes at work with the lycopene giving them their powers!


People fail to realize the power of real food. Always try to choose the most natural, basic, unprocessed foods; it is one of the best things you can do for your body. You will feel so much better. We have yet to duplicate the power of natural foods although we are trying very hard with GMOs, but that is one for another day....
